I was in Rural Development and worked also for the Ministry of Commerce. I trained in St. Croix in 1968 & served in Togo 1969-1971. It was the the very best of times and occasionally the worst too. The People of Togo will always be my inspiration. I will pray for them especially now. This current US Administration is an international source of shame for me. I also pray that the next 3 1/2 years go by real fast! MIKE

In their hour of need, the Togolese people would surely appreciate statements by former PCVs and the Friends of Togo in support of democracy and constitutional law in Togo. This RPCV, who served 2 years in Kara, the base of Eyadema, supports an end to dictatorship and supports the heroic efforts of the Togolese people to bring democracy to their beautiful land.Andrew Scott Berman, Feb 14, 2005

Just browsing the guestbook...
no recent entries so I thought I'd add one. I was a coops volunteer in Akpare (east of Atakpame, near the Nangbeto dam(n)) from 84-86. Currently doing a mindless job, and being wife & mother to 2 wonderful kids (Tim - 6 and Kate - 4).
Loved Peace Corps...loved Togo.
Have spoken to some local schools about it, but have stopped since I was getting known as that crazy lady who speaks weird words and talks about strange places. Not that I minded, but it can get distracting. I'll wait until the kids get a bit older and I can really embarrass them. If they only knew...

Hi All,
I have enjoyed the information on this site.
My daughter, Kerry, has been a PCV in Akame (just south of Notse) for the past 17 months. I have collected her messages and pictures into a web site at www.dbtecs.com/kerryintogo which you may enjoy visiting. Her latest project has been to have a competition to compose a hip-hop song about reducing bush fires. (She was a DJ for her college radio station at Mt. Holyoke College). She got 39 entries, and, Eric MC, a popular hip-hop artist there conducted the semi-finals at a packed, sold out show in Notse last week. The finals are coming up soon in Tsevie. I will be visiting her for two weeks in late March, 2005, and since I'm a photographer, and I understand the Togolese love to have their picture taken, I plan to do so photo projects there. I am taking a portable photo printer and, when I can get to electricity, plan to print pictures to give out while I'm there. I would like to do a photo project that could in some way, directly or indirectly benefit the community and help the PC with its mission rather than just taking tourist pictures. We plan to spend one week in village and 1 week traveling thru Togo. I know two weeks isn't enough but I'll do what I can. Any suggestions on photo projects would be appreciated. Please email me at larry@dbtecs.com.
Thanx,
Larry Manire

20 years gone since I first set foot in Africa. Spent the next 10 years there. Benin, Togo, Comoros Islands, Madagascar, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia all became home for some length of time. I miss them all, but remember Togo most often. The sights, sounds and people are all still a part of me.But where are the RPCVs from 1984-1987? Hardly ever hear from them or see any comments on the FOT website. Where are you all?

Rosa & I are looking for Nick Kulibaba. He was a PCV in a northern village in 1976/77 working in agriculture. He hated the squeak of the ungreased wheels in the donated carts as they went around the bent below his compound. We lived in Ouagadougou and traveled to Togo/Ghana/Benin many times. Yes Nick, 28 years later and Rosa & I are still traveling together. We still remember cleary when you escorted us to the Benin border and we said ur farewells. We were promptly arrested on the other side as Benin had had a coup attempt in the capital and we were estrangers. But they released us within two hours (amazing speed in WA) and we rejoined you on the Togo side. We were surprised to still find you but you had, after all, found someone to talk to.Contact us

I have a Togloese Ben living with me now. His brother was killed for political reasons so I would rather not share his last name. he is here seeking asylu status as is frequent now in Cincinnati. There are probably at least 30 Togolese living here now. Ben and I did a class presentation today on Togo and the importance of water. It went really well with Ben Dancing and singing. We showed films and played music. About 75 students and 3 teachers. For those of you who have not been back Togo is really going through a tough time. They need us now more than ever.

Hi all, Wish I had great news and photos of happy faces splashed in water. I do not. Thanks to everyone who has helped. There have been many. We are still hard at it. Still commited. We have dug 4 bore hole wells all of which returned no water. There is one Canadian well dug several years ago that supposedly still has water in it. Kathy Stutzman is now in Togo with a new type of foot well and if she has time may try to take a look to see if we could recap that existing well. Bill Cocke has sent his nephews in with reports on water levels in the existing wells and has been trying to locate any of the many geohydrological studies that were done in Togo. We could use help here if anyone in Togo is willing to try and ferret out these studies. We have tried in vain to contact CUSO the Canadian organization that most recently dug the wells to see what information they might share. Any help here? Patrice from Atakpame is going in to read and report on what the survey markers that were put in by the Japanese say. We could use an in country volunteer as eyes. Anyone close to Ayakope? It is roughly in the center of the triangle formed by Tsevie, Notse, and Kpalime. We have contacted Mr. Midekor who did studies here and referred us to Mr. Gus Tsogbe for the results and Patrice did contact him by phone but no actual studies were released. The Germans, Swiss, Canadians, Japanese and who knows who else have all been involved for over 20 years in this village searching for a solution to their need for water. There are many broken pumps and dried out cisterns so better organization at the local and prefecture level would help. Bill Cocke mentioned building a "sand dam" which is a way of damming up water underground as a possible solution. They are far from any electricity but any fresh ideas are welcome. Togo toujours. I was just showing my coworker some of the photos from the Home page gallery and I explained what Tchouk was and how Tchokpa was made in the north and some people preferred that over Tchouk...and she asked, "Why? Is it chocolate Tchouk?" and I chuckled... just decided to share that with you.. remember to keep sharing these memories and pictures with others who haven't (yet) had the opportunity to visit Togo.

This website brings back many fond memories of my time in the Peace Corps. I was stationed in Kpedze, in Ghana about 8 km from the border on the road to Kpalime in Togo. This was back in 1968-72. I would visit Kpalime a few times each year and get a good steak and pomme frites meal and enjoy the big town. Everyone in Kpedze had family in Togo because they were all Ewe people. Togo and the Volta Region were the result of the division of German Togoland after WWI between Britain and France. I remember how beautiful the mountain forest was on the road into Kpalime. Incredible! I hope this site inspires young people to consider service in the Peace Corps.

How are the rains in Togo this year? It's usually a question you ask in the Sahel, but since parts of Bukina Faso, Mali, and Niger are getting 30 yr. record rainfall levels, I'm wondering how it is further south.
