Tado Water Project
A recipient of Friends of Togo Peace Corps Partnership funding
To help contribute to improving the living conditions of the Togolese people
in general and those of the prefecture of Moyen-Mono in particular, the NGO
Paix et Progrès Pour Tous (Peace and Progress for All), in
May 2009, applied to the association
Friends of Togo in the USA, for funding aimed primarily at
supplying the population of the town of Tado drinking water from a cistern on
stilts. The town of Tado, center of Tado Canton, in the southeast of Togo,
is generally faced with the lack of drinking water especially in dry season.
For their daily needs, the villagers use either rainwater collected from roofs
of homes and kept in cement tanks or surface water directly from rivers and
backwaters, usually untreated. This situation is not safe for the health of the
consuming population estimated at about 9,000 souls.
Fortunately, before the arrival of the grant in February 2010 for $2,000
US, equivalent to 900,000 F CFA, the Togolese government undertook in
the area from the month of November 2009, the construction of a mini
-village water supply with a capacity of 30 cubic meters which was opened
June 29, 2010 and was commissioned in December of that year.
Given this situation, the Executive Director of the NGO Paix et Progrès
Pour Tous suggested to the donor to use the
funding allocated for strengthening the network of water supply for users,
which was accepted. A bid was requested from the only plumber in the area, and
after negotiations it was agreed that the cost of work commissioned would
come to total of one million one hundred twenty thousand (1,120,000) CFA
francs, or US $2,488.88. The actual work started in May 2010, with the
permission and cooperation of the village committee of water management.
Project Objectives
The objectives pursued by the project were:
- Bring potable water to the users
- Provide the village schools with potable water
- Secure the old water spigots
Financing
The cost of the work came to one million one hundred twenty thousand (1,120,000)
francs CFA, or US $2,488.88, allocated as
| Friends of Togo | 900,000 F |
| Paix et Progrès pour Tous | 170,000 F |
| Contributions from local users | 50,000 F |
| __________ |
| Total | 1,120,000 F |
|---|
Work Accomplished
- Construction of 2 public fountains with 2 spigots in the Domé quarter
(the most populated in the village)
- Connections, with water meters, to 5 schools in Tado:
- Ecole primaire publique G/A à Àjatchè
- Ecole catholique G/B à Domé
- Ecole évangélique à Ahoétougbé
- Collège protestant à Ahoétougbé
- Collège d'enseignement général à Àjatchè
- Installation of water meters at 6 old water kiosks in the village
Project impact on the population
- Women and stuidents in the area no longer have to collect water during the
dry season
- Water is now available at any time of day
- The price of water is affordable to all social classes (25 liters cost 15
francs CFA - just over US $.03)
- The water quality will probably reduce the incidence of water-borne disease
and improve the health of the population
Conclusion
Between the design period and the period of project implementation, the
context was changed positively with the construction of a mini-water supply by
the State for the benefit of the people of Tado.
The water infrastructure which has been put in place needs to be maintained
and managed properly to maintain effectiveness, efficiency, economy and the
environment.
Ultimately, the resources generated by the operation of such public work
should be leveraged to promote local development.
This is the place and the opportunity to thank everyone who
helped solve the problem of drinking water Tado and particularly Friends
of Togo whose spirit of generosity is to be welcomed here. The NGO Paix
et Progrès pour Tous also expresses its appreciation and wishes for
its part, that other than good efforts will occur for this agriculture-oriented
community.
