Bafilo Sanitation Project
A recipient of Friends of Togo Peace Corps Partnership funding
Bafilo is the capital of the prefecture of Assoli located in
the Kara region; it is estimated to have a population of 10,000
inhabitants, the majority of which belong to the Kotokoli ethnicity.
Though there is a significant amount of commerce taking place within
this community as well a moderate NGO presence, the majority of the
towns. members maintain small personal farms, thus creating an
agriculturally based society. Other amenities, that would be deemed
luxuries by most, found in this community are running water and
electricity; many citizens possess a light bulb or two in their homes,
but only a select few have the amenity of running water, and still
fewer are benefited with a flushing toilet. For the majority of the
population even latrines are out of the question and all defecation
needs are fulfilled in the pleasant comfort of a cornfield or other
forested area.
This final deficiency is also experienced by the CEG Tchonworo,
the school programmed to benefit from the construction of two latrines
on the premises as well as the donation of gardening equipment. In
addition to the provision of the latrines and gardening tools, we will
be providing extensive training regarding the benefits of using a
sanitary locale to defecate and the importance of hand washing.
Formations pertaining to the methods for organic and sustainable
gardening will also be given. The Tchonworo neighborhood is located
on the eastern perimeter of Bafilo, 3 to 4 kilometers from the town.s
center. Tchonworo is technically recognized as being a part of Bafilo
proper, but it operates its own elementary and middle school and has
its own small market. The latrines would be for the exclusive use of
the students and administrators who study and work at the school, and
for any visitors who may be on the premises.
