Doclu Well Project
A recipient of Friends of Togo Peace Corps Partnership funding

The community of Doclu is a small village in the prefecture of Tandjaore, 2 km outside of Bogou center (the volunteer's village). The group Kpimante de Doclu is made up of 35 families (men, women, and children) who garden on the edge of the community. Doclu's economy is based on agriculture, and all families own and work fields. They sell their produce at the Bogou market. The Kpimante de Doclu group was started in 2007. The gardeners work their plots along a dried-up riverbed outside of the village. They have an adviser, who lives in Bogou, that helped set up their constitution and organizes their meetings. The group also has a president, vice-president, and secretary. The main concern for the community is water availability. The Doclu gardeners have created their garden plots beside a dried-up riverbed and must dig shallow holes to find water for their plants. The gardeners have expressed their need for a constant water source throughout the year to help them cultivate the land. When dry season arrives (March - May), the gardeners have to abandon their work until the rainy season due to the lack of water. The gardeners of Doclu are most directly affected and will be in charge of helping see the project come to fruition.

The goal is to build a well beside the garden plots outside of Doclu. This well will help the gardeners to cultivate a larger quantity and better quality of products for the community, resulting in a higher level of food security during the hungry season. In the short-term, the Doclu gardeners will dig and build a well beside their garden plots before the rainy season. The Doclu group will be the main beneficiaries of the well project, being the ones to use the well for watering their gardens throughout the year. They will benefit from this constant water source during the dry season and will be able to produce vegetables during this time for the families and for the community. The well's presence beside the gardens will help enhance the quality and quantity of foods produced in Doclu. Doclu gardeners sell their produce weekly at the Bogou markets. If the gardeners are able to produce during the dry season, the health of the communities surrounding Doclu also will benefit from food availability.

The Well has been completed!
